Chapter TWENTY-SIX

“Get up,” the man said in heavily accented English as he and his associate stormed into the shipping container. Decker noticed the rifles slung on their backs as they jerked her to her feet and each grabbed an arm.

“Jesus,” Decker groaned as the grunt to her right pulled on her injured shoulder. “You guys don’t have to be so rough,” she added.

“No talk,” the apparent leader said as they started walking her out of the container. The pace picked up as they cleared the container out onto the concrete warehouse floor. Decker’s feet barely made contact with the floor as the two men forced her toward the nearest exit.

Decker’s vision was obscured by the worn burlap sack over her head, but she could make out the warehouse and several vehicles and boxes as they dragged her the twenty-five feet to the door. She tried to make as many mental notes of her surroundings as she could. It was a habit from investigations, but she also knew it could be beneficial to her eventual escape attempt.

The thick, warm air hit her as they forced her through the narrow doorway. She had no idea what time it was, but she at least knew it was daytime. She guessed morning, but she had no way of knowing. Her sense of time had been deprived as part of her captivity.

Her shoulder burned as the men pulled her down the sidewalk. She tried to keep pace to alleviate the pressure, but after hours of sitting, her muscles were stiff and her legs barely moved. She was also dehydrated and hungry, further weakening her ability to keep pace.

“Hello, Agent Decker,” a male voice said as the men stopped her. Through her hood, she barely made out the silhouette of the man she almost instantly recognized to be Xin. His sinister voice was unmistakable.

“If you let me go, I won’t kill you,” Decker said unconvincingly.

Xin let out a hearty laugh. “You Americans are all alike,” he replied. “In any case, your time here is now done.”

“Where are you taking me?” Decker demanded as the two men started pulling her down the sidewalk again. Decker felt the sun against her skin as they dragged her around the corner of the building. She could hear seagulls in the distance and what sounded like waves gently crashing against the sea wall.

The two men continued pulling on her arms as they walked her across what seemed like hundreds of feet of parking lot. She could see more shipping containers and giant cranes through her hood. She realized she was at a harbor and she guessed they were taking her toward the bay.

They took her up a series of stairs. Her legs felt better after walking. She still felt weak, but the exercise restored some of the circulation and worked out the cramps. She knew she would need every ounce of energy.

As they reached the top of the stairs, the men stopped. They said something in Chinese to another man who grabbed her by the collar and pulled her forward.
